Undeniable Signs You Need to Replace Your Garage Door Opener

Residential— House Flood in L.A. & Orange County

A garage door opener is an integral part of your garage door system. If it's not working properly, you may need to have a garage door company fix it or install a new one. Consider these undeniable signs that you need to replace your garage door opener.

Sign #1: Putting in New Batteries Doesn't Do Much to Improve Performance

Garage door openers can start acting up when the batteries are running low. If you reinstall the batteries on your garage door opener and still have a problem getting it to work efficiently, you may need to get a new one. Just make sure that the batteries you were putting in the garage opener were brand new and the right fit for your garage door opener.

Sign #2: Your Garage Door Opener Has Been Submerged in Water

Electronics and water do not mix. If your garage door opener has been submerged in water, such as from a flood in the garage, you’re better off replacing it. Get a new opener rather than try to work with a damaged system that could be dangerous. If only the garage door remote was submerged, you don't have to get a whole new system — just get a new remote.

You may prevent water damage from happening to the remote control of your new garage door opener by keeping it in a sealed compartment of your car or in a watertight container in your garage. If your garage is often open or leaks in the rain, prioritize fixing the problem to protect your new garage door opener.

Sign #3: Your Garage Door Opener Detaches from the Door

If your garage door detaches from the garage door opener device on the ceiling of your garage, have it replaced right away. If it even looks like it might detach, you should get a new one as soon as you can. A garage door that detaches and lands suddenly without warning can be deadly for any personal or animal who happens to be in its way.

Sign #4: Your Garage Door Is Opening More Slowly

If you notice that your garage door is opening more slowly, a big problem may be brewing within your garage door opener. One possible cause is that the roller brackets or track simply needs lubrication. In some cases, you may need to update the settings.

Contact a technician to come check out your garage door if it's slowing down or if the opener hesitates. You may need to obtain a new garage door opener immediately because a garage door opener that's malfunctioning in this way will be dangerous if it comes undone.

Sign #5: You've Tried Turning Off LED Lights and Problems Persist

Although not all LED bulbs will interfere with garage door openers, there have been reports of situations where LED lights have caused problems with garage door openers. If your garage door opener is acting up, you may first try troubleshooting by turning off any LED lights that you use nearby or replacing the LED bulbs with regular bulbs.

If the problems stop when the lights are off or you have started using regular bulbs, you probably don't need to replace your garage door opener. On the other hand, if the problems persist, it's best to get a new garage door opener. Meanwhile, if you want to continue using LED lights, make sure that you buy popular name brands that are properly shielded to avoid future issues.

Sign #6: Your Garage Door Seems to Have a Mind of Its Own

Garage doors that are working intermittently are probably doing so because they are on their last legs. A wiring issue may be to blame, and you may need an entirely new system to correct the problem.

If you must sometimes press the button on your garage door opener remote many times to get it to work, you may need to replace the garage door opener itself. If you have already tried basic fixes like installing new batteries or trying your other remotes, the issue probably is with the opener itself, not just the remote.

Sign #7: You Notice Weird Noises from the Garage Door When It Opens

If you have used your garage door for a long time, you probably know all the normal noises it makes on ascent and descent. If you start to notice weird noises when your garage door opens, that may be a sign that of trouble with your garage door opener. Have a garage door company look at it to be sure the system is working safely.
